A principios del 73, un día me caí patinando en hielo, perdí el conocimiento y fui a dar a Xoco, a la Cruz Verde. Recuerdo que entre toda la gente que rodeaba mi cama al único que pude reconocer fue a mi papá.
Cómo no va a ser así “si eres tan famoso”, le dije. Él respondió con una de sus acostumbradas carcajadas, que solo me confirmó su alivio por verme bien nuevamente.
Poco después de mi accidente comenzó su enfermedad. Yo sabía que se trataba de algo serio porque, sentado, lo veía encorvarse repetidas veces durante el día, y permanecía cada vez más tiempo en esa postura. Ni a mi hermano ni a mí nos decían qué pasaba, pero mi papá ya no era el mismo. Aunque nuestro juego del espejo, en el que me daba un beso y luego yo le daba uno a él y el se desmayaba para que le diera otro y al despertar me preguntara muchas cosas, no se detuvo ni en esas circunstancias, sólo que era mas lento y se le olvidaban las preguntas; yo tenía que recordárselas y luego hace mi parte. Así duró tres meses.
Una noche, al entrar a su recámara con mi guitarra para cantarle, pues decía que le gustaban mucho mis composiciones, lo encontré apretándose el estómago. Estiró el brazo para pedirme su medicina y después de media hora pude hablar con él, pero muy poco tiempo, pues se quedó dormido.
Al día siguiente llegaba yo de la escuela y vi a la ambulancia estacionada frente a la casa. Sentí algo ardiente que me oprimía del cerebro a las piernas y no me dejaba respirar. Entré de prisa y vi como sacaban a mi papá de su recámara en una camilla. Mi mamá ponía cosas de baño en una maleta y aunque su rostro expresaba dolor, no dejaba de sonreírle a mi papá y se apresuraba para no alejarse de él ni un segundo.
Ya para salir, ella me dijo algo, pero no la escuché. También me dio un trozo de papel con el teléfono del hospital al que iban. Cuando mi papá vio que yo estaba allí, actuó como si nada diferente estuviera pasando. Hizo que quienes lo llevaban en la camilla se detuvieran y se incorporó para abrazarme. Me hizo señas de que le diera un beso, y me acerqué con miedo a dárselo. Fingió desmayarse para que le diera un segundo beso, como era la costumbre, y se lo di, pero esta vez no volvió en sí. Ese día supe que había llegado el final de nuestro juego del espejo. Ese día sentí que mi vida terminaba.
Nos dijeron que mi papá no saldría del hospital hasta que no le realizaran todos los exámenes para determinar el tratamiento. Mi mamá no se separó de él ni un momento y mi hermano y yo lo íbamos a ver todas las tardes. Un día le pregunté al médico sobre la enfermedad, y el solo me dijo que la medicina hacía maravillas y por eso veíamos que ya no había dolor. Pero no me dijo que lo curaría. Me sentía engañada, pero mi papá aunque débil, se encontraba de excelente humor a tal grado que se moría de risa de verse tan delgado.
---Rosita--- le decía a mi mamá, --- cuando salga de aquí te voy a comprar un camper equipada para irnos a viajar por el Pacífico. Quiero reponer mi peso con pescado y que conozcamos otro pedazo de mar.
En abril fue que me preguntó:
---Rosalíta, ¿Vas a querer fiesta de quince años?
---No papá, a mí no me gustan esas fiestas cursis para nada. Ya me lo habías preguntado cuando estuvimos en la casa de mi tío Manuel en Cuernavaca.
Levantándose de la cama me dijo:
---Ah, entonces el vals lo vamos a bailar tu y yo.
Dos meses después, la madrugada del 29 de junio de 1973, mi papá murió víctima de cáncer y sus últimas palabras las dirigió a mi mamá.
---Rosita, que bonita estás. Acércate, cántame nuestra canción--- Ella, le obedeció y empezó a cantar pero algo hizo que se equivocara en la letra y mi papá sonriendo, le expresó:
---Así no va Rosita…
Él comenzó a cantar y cerrando los ojos de inmediato entró en estado de coma.
Así me lo platicó mi mamá, por lo que puedo decir que se realizaron sus palabras cuando en una película dijo:
---… A mí me dicen Tin Tan, por que en mí todo es música….
Me da alegría saber que pronto despertará para terminar de cantar su canción, junto a toda esa gente que tanto lo amamos.
